Overview

This experiential workshop has been designed for instructional coaches and learning leaders who support the professional growth of educators.

Participants begin by examining their own professional practice — their strengths, values, beliefs, patterns of behaviour and ways of responding. Through this process, they bring greater awareness to the often-unspoken knowledge and judgment that shape how they work.

This reflective foundation is then used to explore tacit pedagogy: how professional expertise can be recognised, surfaced and made more visible in practice.

Aim

The overarching aim of the workshop is for instructional coaches to experience the process of surfacing their own tacit professional knowledge, so they can better recognise and support the same process in the educators they coach.

By the end of the workshop participants will:

Identify and examine the strengths, values, beliefs and recurring patterns that shape their own professional practice.

Surface and articulate the tacit knowledge and judgment that underpin how they work.

Recognise patterns of constrictive and expansive energy within professional practice and coaching interactions.

Understand how cognitive apprenticeship can make tacit professional thinking visible through modelling, dialogue and shared problem-solving.

Explore how these experiences can inform their coaching practice and help educators surface and strengthen their own tacit professional knowledge.

What is Tacit Pedagogy?

Tacit pedagogy is the largely unspoken professional intelligence an educator brings to the learning process.

For instructional coaches, learning to recognise tacit pedagogy creates another dimension of professional dialogue. It allows them to help educators bring their strengths, judgment and ways of knowing into greater awareness — so these can be examined, articulated and strengthened deliberately.

The idea draws on the work of Michael Polanyi, whose concept of tacit knowledge recognised that much of human expertise is carried through experience and practice rather than through explicit explanation alone. His central insight was that “we can know more than we can tell.”

In education, tacit pedagogy can be seen in:

what an educator notices
how they interpret what is happening
when they intervene and when they step back
how they explain, question and respond
the expectations they communicate
the confidence, curiosity or independence they draw out of learners
the particular strengths they bring to helping learning move forward

These qualities often become so natural to experienced educators that they are barely noticed or articulated.

The Professional Learning Experience

This is a live online workshop delivered across two 90-minute sessions.

The learning is experiential and conversational rather than lecture-based. Participants move through a continuous process of personal reflection, case exploration and professional dialogue.

Across the two sessions, participants will:

Work through the Core Reflection model using their own professional experience
Explore case situations to identify the tacit knowledge, strengths and patterns operating beneath professional practice
Examine constrictive and expansive ways of operating
Use dialogue and shared reflection to make professional thinking more visible
Explore cognitive apprenticeship as a way of modelling thinking and working alongside others

Sonthaya Chutisacha, MSc in Counseling Psychology

A reflection coach, school counsellor and learning coach with hands-on experience supporting students, educators and school teams.

Sonthaya combines psychological insight, administrative experience and structured reflection to help professionals turn what they know into what they can do.

She has designed and facilitated learning experiences for 600+ school-based professionals from 70+ schools and organisations worldwide, including participants from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and America.
