Overview

As explicit knowledge becomes increasingly accessible in the AI era, education must pay greater attention to forms of human knowing that develop through experience.

This workshop helps educators identify, articulate and strengthen their own tacit pedagogy — a professional capacity that becomes essential when explicit knowledge is instantly accessible and the value of teaching increasingly lies in developing higher order cognitive capacities in learners.

By the end of the workshop participants will:

Identify, articulate and intentionally strengthen the tacit knowledge, judgment and recurring patterns that shape their teaching practice.

Understand how professional thinking becomes visible to learners through cognitive apprenticeship.

Recognise the higher order cognitive capacities learners need to develop in an age of instantly accessible explicit knowledge.

Examine where curriculum structures, routines or AI may be limiting professional judgment and deeper learner thinking.

Redesign one learning experience to better develop judgment, discernment, independence and deeper ways of knowing

What is Tacit Pedagogy?

Tacit pedagogy is the largely unspoken professional intelligence an educator brings to the learning process.

The idea draws on the work of Michael Polanyi, whose concept of tacit knowledge recognised that much of human expertise is carried through experience and practice rather than through explicit explanation alone. His central insight was that “we can know more than we can tell.”

In education, this can be seen in:

what an educator notices
how they interpret what is happening
when they intervene and when they step back
how they explain, question and respond
the expectations they communicate
the confidence, curiosity or independence they draw out of learners
the particular strengths they bring to helping learning move forward

These qualities often become so natural to experienced educators that they are barely noticed by the educators themselves.

Bringing tacit pedagogy into awareness allows educators to recognise the professional strengths, judgment and leadership qualities already shaping their learners — and to articulate, examine and strengthen them deliberately.

The Professional Learning Experience

This is not a workshop about adopting another teaching methodology. Participants work from their own professional practice.

Through guided reflection, case analysis, professional dialogue and applied learning design, educators examine the knowledge beneath their teaching and consider what aspects of human expertise become increasingly important in an AI-rich learning environment.

Programme Facilitator

Sonthaya Chutisacha, MSc in Counseling Psychology

A reflection coach, school counsellor and learning coach with hands-on experience supporting students, educators and school teams.

Sonthaya combines psychological insight, administrative experience and structured reflection to help professionals turn what they know into what they can do.

She has designed and facilitated learning experiences for 600+ school-based professionals from 70+ schools and organisations worldwide, including participants from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and America.
