Overview
Every classroom includes learners whose behaviour may fall outside expected patterns. This programme helps Education Assistants develop the awareness, judgement and practical skills needed to manage and respond to divergent behaviour while continuing to support participation, learning and growing independence.
The Learning Experience
The programme is built around two central methodologies:
Core Reflection
Before responding effectively to another person, we need to understand what we ourselves bring into the classroom. Participants will reflect on their strengths, values, professional purpose, habitual responses and personal triggers.
This creates an internal point of stability from which they can observe, think and respond rather than simply react.
Case Study Lab
Case studies form the practical core of all three days. Participants will work collaboratively with realistic and evolving classroom situations to:

Observe behaviour without immediately interpreting or labelling it

Explore what may be happening beneath the behaviour

Consider different possible responses

Examine the likely consequences of each response

Practise responding to difficult situations

Consult with peers and consider alternative perspectives

Apply the learning to situations from their own classrooms
There may not always be one correct response. The focus is on developing professional judgement.
Areas of Learning
Recognising Divergent Behaviour
Use current classroom observations to identify patterns in attention, impulse, regulation, sensory response, processing, communication and participation.
Developing Reflective Readiness
Use Core Reflection to identify personal strengths, assumptions, triggers and habitual responses.
Understanding Behaviour in Context
Examine how task demands, environment, communication, sensory load and classroom expectations may be shaping behaviour.
Managing and Responding
Develop practical strategies for intervention, regulation, boundaries, de-escalation and re-engagement with learning.
Aligning with the Teacher
Learn how to communicate observations, clarify roles, and agree on consistent responses.
Building Learner Independence
Learn how to scaffold, prompt and gradually reduce adult support.
Programme Facilitator
Sonthaya Chutisacha, MSc in Counseling Psychology
A reflection coach, school counsellor and learning coach with hands-on experience supporting students, educators and school teams.
Sonthaya combines psychological insight, classroom practice and structured reflection to help educators turn what they know into what they can do.
