Education Assistants: Professional Practice and Classroom Impact
A Blended Professional Learning Programme for Education Assistants
Education Assistants bring valuable knowledge, experience and capability to their work. Yet the pace of classroom life rarely provides time to pause, recognise these strengths and examine their practice.
This programme provides that space. Through reflection, practical frameworks and professional exchange, participants build on what already works and explore how their practice can continue to evolve.

Professional identity and role clarity
Examine the purpose, responsibilities and boundaries of the Education Assistant role. Develop a clearer understanding of what it means to work as a professional partner in learning.

Observation and professional inquiry
Learn to distinguish between what has been directly observed and the assumptions or interpretations that may follow. Use questions and consultation to develop a fuller understanding before acting.
03
Understanding and responding to learner behaviour
Explore what behaviour may communicate about a learner’s needs, experiences or circumstances. Consider responses that are thoughtful, appropriate and consistent.
04
Communication and consultation
Develop clear ways to share observations, raise questions, seek guidance and discuss possible responses with teachers and colleagues.
05
Teacher–EA partnership
Examine how Education Assistants and teachers can establish shared expectations, communicate effectively and work in alignment when supporting learners.
06
Scaffolding learning
Learn to adjust the amount and type of support provided. Help learners engage with challenges while avoiding unnecessary adult dependence.
07
Coaching and learner independence
Practise using questions, prompts and feedback to develop learner confidence, reflection, participation and ownership.

Identify evidence of understanding, progress and misconceptions. Record observations objectively, offer appropriate feedback and communicate useful learning information to the teacher.
