Background & Overview
Teachers and coaches seldom have the opportunity to discuss the art of teaching and coaching. This workshop is designed to give coaches and PE teachers an opportunity to learn from the instructor as well as each other regarding the important aspects of leadership. The workshop will help coaches and PE teachers examine their coaching and teaching styles. In addition, they will determine if they use best practices to create a positive environment for learning and connect with kids.
Knowledge
Examine the effectiveness of different leadership styles.
Gain an in-depth understanding of the credible leader model for effective teaching and coaching.
Identify characteristics of a healthy culture.
Understand the importance of teaching productive psychological skills.
Skills

Develop or refine a personal philosophy of coaching/teaching.

Develop effective communication and motivation techniques.

Develop or refine a personal philosophy on discipline.

Design effective teaching and practice schedules to maximize learning.

Develop methods for selecting and developing team leaders.

Design strategies for teaching skills of quality practice, concentration, self-confidence, embracing pressure and being a great teammate
Practice
In the course of the workshop:

Participants will engage in small and large group discussions to promote peer to peer learning.

Participants will engage in debates that will challenge and affirm their philosophy around various aspects of the art of teaching and coaching.

To have a better understanding of how to teach psychological skills, participants will engage in activities where they will experience pressure and .self-talk.

Participants will engage in several team building activities they can use to develop teamwork with their students and athletes.

Course Leader
Dr. Greg Dale is Director of Sport Psychology and Leadership Programs for Duke University Athletics. He is also a professor of Sport Psychology and Sport Ethics at Duke. Greg has written five books for teachers, coaches, students and parents. He also provides professional development workshops for coaches and teachers around the world.
