Objective
To deepen participants’ understanding of the challenges and opportunities for sense-making, reasoning, and academic language development of relevant mathematics concepts.
Goals
-
Engage participants in reflection about our individual and collective beliefs about learning.
-
Introduce the Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics (TRU MATH) as a framework for creating and implementing a mathematically powerful classroom.
-
Deepen participants’ understanding of the mathematics language related to the concepts and reasoning processes key at different grade spans.
-
Discuss pedagogical implications and strategies for developing language with content, particularly with English learners, as tools for understanding mathematics.
-
Begin to design instructional events with the strategies learned and dual goals—language goals and content goals.
-
The class will also address the main shifts in the Common Core State Standards and will provide teachers with resources on how to learn more about the shifts (beyond the two-day class).
Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics (TRU MATH)
TRU is a framework for characterizing powerful learning environments in crisp and actionable ways. It provides a straightforward and accessible language for discussing what happens (and should happen) in classrooms, in professional preparation and professional development . TRU is consistent with what we know to be good practice and it focuses classroom and administrative attention on what counts in learning. Central to TRU are the 5 dimensions of classroom activity. The TRU framework for Math (TRU MATH) is as below:
