Based upon the book of the same name, this workshop provides a whirlwind tour through numerous techniques which should be commonly applied by counselors using Cognitive-behavioral, Behavioral, Social learning, Adlerian, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, and Solution-focused brief approaches.


Integrative counseling techniques from the following approaches:

  • Solution-focused brief counseling

  • Adlerian and psychodynamic 

  • Gestalt

  • Cognitive-behavioral

  • Behavioral 

  • Social learning


  • Apply cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, Adlerian, and Gestaltian approaches and techniques to the treatment of anxiety, mood, and trauma.

  • Apply behavioral and social learning theory approaches to the treatment of behavioral and impulse disorders.

  • Apply at least two dozen counseling techniques to their work with students and clients.


At the end of each session, participants will practice applying learned skills, strategies, and techniques to past, present, or future students/clients through a series of reflective application exercises or role-plays with other session participants.

Session 2

The Big Four, Firing Sequence, Systematic Desensitization

Session 3

CBT Approaches and Techniques: REBT, Reframing, Thought Stopping

Session 4

Gestalt approaches and techniques (Empty Chair, Role Reversal, Body Movement and Exaggeration)



Session 5

Behavioral approaches using positive reinforcement (Premack Principle, Behavior Chart, Token Economy, Behavioral Contract), Social learning (Modeling, Behavioral Rehearsal, Role Play)

Session 6

Behavioral approaches using punishment (Extinction, Time Out, Response Cost, Overcorrection)

Session 7

Solution-focused techniques (Exceptions, Problem Free Talk, Miracle Question, Flagging the Minefield); Mindfulness Meditation

Session 8

Wrap Up, and Evaluation

Course Leader

Bradley T. Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, LPC, LP, LSP, is the 2012-2013 President of the American Counseling Association (ACA), Fulbright Senior Specialist, and a professor in the school counseling program in the School of Education at Loyola University Maryland. He has authored or edited more than 30 books. His research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psycho-educational tests and outcomes research and has resulted in the publication of more than 70 refereed journal articles, 100 book chapters, and a dozen published tests. He has received numerous awards for his scholarship and service to the counseling profession from ACA and the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE), organizations within which he has held numerous leadership positions.
